Xolmis pyrope

DESCRIPTION:
Fire-eyed Diucon
Diucón
Pyrope pyrope
Length: 220mm. Sexes alike. Bill black; iris red; upper part of head, auriculars, hind neck and above mostly olivaceous plumbeous grey; rump and uppertail coverts light grey; rectrices plumbeous grey margined light grey to whitish in outermost feathers. Throat white; breast ash grey; belly and undertail coverts white; flanks stained cinnamon buff; wing coverts as back; remiges blackish with tertiaries white-margined. Legs black.
Average weight: 50g. Habitat and behaviour: the Fire-eyed Diucon is one of the most common Tyrannids in the Andean and sub-Andean regions. It inhabits open woodland and adjacent shrubby areas; found in pairs, perched on exposed branches, snapping insects on the wing or pouncing on its prey on the ground, briefly remaining there and quickly moving to another perch. Very tame, it freely approaches human settlements, where it is commonly seen catching insects that alight on the windows. Some fruits are also part of its diet, such as those from the Arrayán (Myrceugenella apiculata). Vocalisations consist of a series of short repeated and soft notes. Nests are built in crevices or cavities, trees and shrubs; clutch size up to three whitish cream eggs with reddish markings.
